Girl Scout Troop 41978

Girl Scouts of Oregon & Southwest Washington

Leader Appreciation Celebration April 25, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — webadmin @ 10:07 pm

Thank you to all the lovely sentiments from all the girls. Huge thanks goes out to the entire troop leadership team without whom we really couldn’t function as a troop. Having other adults take on tasks frees the leader up to do more planning for the girls.

So, on Tuesday, May 1, we will be planning for Service Unit camp. This meeting is REQUIRED for all those girls attending camp with us. Those girls who are not going to camp get the week off and we’ll see you again on May 8th.

Thank you!

Spring Break March 26, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — webadmin @ 5:42 pm

Don’t forget that Spring Break is next week. We will not be having a regular meeting, however, if there is interest, we might be able to plan a special event.  If you’ll be in town, please email me and let me know if you’d like to participate on Tuesday evening.

Cookie Sales 2012 February 3, 2012

Filed under: Cookies — webadmin @ 4:09 am

Did you know cookie sales are the primary source of funding for the troop? Participating in cookie sales pays for service unit camp as well as registration for the next membership year. For just 68 boxes of cookies, you’ll save $47 out of your family’s budget (selling to friends & neighbors, not yourself). We also subsidize other events, buy awards & insignia for the girls, pay for troop supplies & fund service projects. There is still time to participate in this year’s sale. Talk to Mary or Lenora about taking orders & participating in booth sales.

Goals Set for 2012 Sales January 16, 2012

On Tuesday, January 10, the girls did some brainstorming for our service project goals as well as our cookie celebration.

1st, our cookie celebration if we earn enough will be to take all the girls to Wings & Waves at the Evergreen Aviation Museum.  I’ll be making a chart to show our progress for our goal for this event to take place.  Plan B is to go to Big Al’s Bowling for a party.

2nd, our troop service projects were voted on.  We may work in some more ideas, but here’s what we’ve got: April 7th Easter Egg Hunt at Felida Park.  We are hosting this event for the community.   We will also be having a STUFF drive.  We’ll have a day to collect clothing, household goods, etc.  The troop will get together and sort the stuff we collect into “clothing” and “other stuff”.  Clothing will be donated to a shelter to benefit humans and the other stuff will be donated to the Humane Society Thrift Store to benefit the animals.  We are also looking into ‘Adopt a Soldier’ to send cookies, snacks and personal items to soldiers still deployed overseas.

Finally, we talked about World Thinking Day.  We broke into patrols and since World Thinking Day is on a Tuesday this year, each patrol has chosen a country to research and the patrols will be putting together a display to teach the other patrols about their country.  The Service Unit World Thinking Day celebration is on February 13th this year.  Our troop is working on the Soup group for the buffet dinner at the event.  We have signed up for 20 spaces.  We’ve got 15 on the roster so far.  Some folks have paid their deposit, some haven’t.  On February 12th, we need to get together to make our soup for the event.  We can do this at my house, or if someone would like to volunteer their kitchen for the group to get together and cook, that would be great.

Don’t forget, cookie pre-orders are due by 8 pm on Monday, January 16th.  Please email those to Mary Heid and CC me.

New Badges January 4, 2012

Filed under: Awards & Recognitions — webadmin @ 10:48 pm

Yes, I am scanning and loading the new badges for all the program levels to our website. These are for troop use only. Please don’t advertise or share with anyone outside our troop.

Thank you.

Cookies Sales are here (plus some) January 4, 2012

Yup, we start taking orders on Saturday.  If you missed last night’s meeting, please let me know if your daughter is participating in this year’s sales or not. I am free this evening to forms, etc. I am not free again until Saturday.

The girls set their own, personal goals last night, which we added up to a troop goal.  Each girl set a number of boxes that she is comfortable with.  Some were realistic, some were quite low and some of our girls dream BIG!  So, we then added up all the personal goals to come up with our troop goal of 11,000 boxes. OH MY! Well, if they actually reach their goal of 11,000 boxes, I promised to dye my hair a rainbow of colors and wear a My Little Pony costume at Service Unit Camp in May.  Not sure if I should cross my fingers or not.

The girls are to think about what they want to do with the money they will earn selling their cookies.  We need a troop celebration, nothing too large. Disneyland has already been discussed and discarded. They also need to come up with a service project idea. One idea was to visit a homeless shelter and remodel a room for kids: paint the walls, stock with games and toys, etc.  Help your Girl Scout come up with an idea for service with animals, people, environment…what does she want to do to help her community?  Does her school need supplies for something?

The troop already has a community service event on April 7.  We will be hosting a community Spring Festival/Easter Egg Hunt at Felida Park.  If you would like to help, or know someone at a local church, please let me know. I’d like to get the area churches and businesses involved. Farrar’s Bistro has already said “yes.”

Winter Court of Awards and On December 9, 2011

Well, obviously, I have not kept up with the weekly summaries. With so much happening each meeting, I’m just not able to keep up with all the activities.  Most of the girls have completed 75% of a Journey. Each program level just needs to come up with a Take Action Project.  So, I’m taking a breather in December and taking some time off.

January starts off with a bang and the beginning of cookie sales. Order forms will be passed out at the first meeting as pre-sales begin at 9 am on January 7th. Yes, that’s a Saturday. No, you CANNOT sell before that. We follow the Girl Scout law.

We’ll also need to start preparations for World Thinking Day, Bahamas Style.  Do some research about the Bahamas and traditional foods of the islands. Prepare a sample to bring to the meeting on January 10th.

Check Facebook and the Calendar for some other optional events in December and upcoming events in January.

October 4th (What? Already?) October 6, 2011

Filed under: Meeting recap — webadmin @ 2:39 am

Yep, we’re into October already.  September 27th, the various age levels began working on their respective Journeys.  Daisies are working on Welcome to the Daisy Garden, and we are VERY grateful for Ian C. (Kiera’s Dad) for stepping in and being the Daisy parent. The girls looked like they were having a great time.

Brownies are working on the Brownie Quest.  Juniors are working on Get Moving. Again, we are grateful for the parent support with Gina M. working with the Brownies and Candi W. and Kara B. working with the Juniors.  Sally F. is continuing to work with all the older girl levels as they are finishing their Take Action Project from the summer. Kathy C. is also working with these levels.

For October 4th, the girls had a great meeting working on their Journeys.  We got to taste test the new cookies for this year’s sales: Savannah Smiles.  If you remember Lemon Coolers from a few years ago, you’ll already be familiar with this delightful flavor.

Each of the groups was issued a challenge: to fill up a birthday party bag.  Daisies & Brownies are working together, Juniors are filling their own and Cadettes & Seniors (no Ambassadors were present) are filling a bag.  Please help your Girl Scout remember the items she is to bring, or if she can’t remember, choose an item for a birthday party and bring that.  The Birthday Party In A Bag will be donated to local shelters or food banks for distribution to children.  Items: cake mix, frosting, birthday candles, small toy (present), supplies for 8 (plates, napkins, forks) or other birthday party items.

Please check out the list of upcoming field trips and let us know if you’d like to go with us.  Sign ups will be available at meetings.

Don’t forget Girl Scout Skate Night on Monday at 6 pm at Golden Skate on 4th Plain Blvd.  The field trip/registration book will be available there as well to sign up for upcoming activities.

Tuesday, October 11, we’ll be having our Bridging/Rededication Ceremony.  Please wear your uniform: khaki bottoms, white shirt & program level vest/sash.  If your Girl Scout is bridging and you’d like to have  the vest, etc. purchased & assembled for you, please let me know ASAP.  I plan on going on Friday to do our troop shopping.

September 20th meeting September 25, 2011

Filed under: Meeting recap — webadmin @ 6:59 pm

September 20th was our welcome back meeting. We met at Hazel Dell Park which doesn’t have any lighting in their shelter. Need to remember that as the sun goes down before our meetings are over.

The girls made water bottles that they will need to bring to each meeting. These water bottles can also be used in their daypacks for field trips/events. They also assembled pocket first aid kits to include in their daypacks.

Next meeting: Sept. 27th, still seeking a location.

Falling into 2012 September 12, 2011

Filed under: Meeting recap — webadmin @ 3:56 am

Well, the 2012 membership year.   The parent meeting is scheduled for September 13th at 7 pm at the Round Table at JM Plaza (near Safeway on Hazel Dell Ave.)

We’re working on an agenda and will share when it’s ready. Be ready with questions, etc.

Thanx to those who have already volunteered for some of the Troop Committee positions.  We’ll be taking names for those that are still open, or if you want to help with a position, just talk to the person already listed.  Most will not mind sharing.  A big troop needs a lot of support.

Don’t forget your calendards. We’ve got quite the offering of activities for your Girl Scout. Remember, your Girl Scout doesn’t have to do everything, just what she’s interested in, and there are more activities available.
